The increasing number of mobile devices and the growing users have become the target for unauthorised and potentially harmful software, including worms, viruses, and spyware. As a result it becomes essential for any organisation to secure and manage these devices and data stored.

As per an IDC research, the number of worldwide converged mobile device shipments would have reached 167 million by the end of 2009 and it forecasts that this will increase to over 291 million by 2013. Similarly, in 2010, smartphone shipments will exceed personal computer and in 2012 there will be 76 million new Android (open source platform-based) smartphones.

The growth in smartphone usage is bound to create newer risks for wireless carriers, says Joe Pasqua, Vice-President, Research, Symantec Research Labs. Today more consumers download applications to mobile devices using open operating systems. This introduces new security challenges for mobile carriers or operators. The existing security offerings limit freedom for carriers and mobile users.

Addressing a group of visiting journalists, Pasqua said that as more mobile users access corporate networks through their smartphones, there is every possibility of malware writers and criminals to gain access to sensitive data as often the carriers do not have protected pathways.
Symantec's mobile strategy would focus on the effective integration of its mobile security and management solutions to help customers reduce downtime, increase user productivity, improve response time and provide protection and management throughout the mobile device lifecycle — from provisioning and management to security and eventual device retirement. Pasqua says that Symantec mobile reputation security is an innovative approach by the company and the researches done are adoptable to the needs of multiple customers. The lab has been working and developing prototype of a next generation mobile security for smartphones. This reputation-based security for smartphones would give fundamental technology and protection for multiple customer segments. The initial prototype is geared primarily towards wireless carriers and also to solve critical challenges for corporate customers and mobile end-users.
